The 'Speak your KIND' Philosophy

Each of us learns how to cope and develops patterns of relating to the world based on our life experiences.  We repeat these patterns over and over... because they work.  Or perhaps more accurately, they serve a purpose- they get us through tough situations, help us to get our needs met, or protect us in some way.  â€‹Simply put, we do what we know, what we’ve been taught, or what has been modeled for us.  If your current way of relating or problem solving is working, don’t change it!  Why would you bother?

But if you’re reading this, chances are something isn’t working and you might be feeling restless, frustrated, hopeless, angry, or some other combination of feelings.  And you aren’t alone.

Humans are an incredibly resilient species.  Over a lifetime we develop any number of ingenious ways to handle problems and to protect ourselves from real or perceived threats.  And many people use the same coping strategies for a lifetime without consequence or regret. But some of us wake up one day and realize that the old patterns aren’t working… we think, "I'm miserable" or "there must be another way!"

What do you do when those old patterns no longer serve their purpose…when they prevent you from moving on, from finding peace or from being truly happy?

The first step is understanding that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Honoring your suffering and seeking to alleviate it is the ultimate gift of kindness and compassion that you can offer yourself.  Healing and lasting change will not happen if you are blaming and berating yourself for the way that you are or for the choices you’ve made in the past.

In therapy you will not only develop more compassion and kindness for yourself (and for others) but you will get a better understanding of why you’ve done things a certain way.
You’ll start to recognize those patterns of thinking and behaving that are no longer serving you and replace them with new ones.  Whether it is freedom from self-criticism, improving your communication, setting better boundaries, or learning to take care of yourself the same way you take care of others, you will find yourself better able to 'Speak your KIND' and will free yourself from guilt, shame, anger and resentment.

You can create the peaceful, balanced life that you seek... and I can help.

About Angela

I have been in the mental health field for over twenty years.   As a clinical social worker, I have been in a number of different roles and have provided counseling in a many different types of practice- older adults and aging, adult mental health, adolescent and family counseling, and crisis intervention to name a few.

As a therapist I believe that my relationship with my clients is the single most important contributor to their success.  As such, you can expect that you and your problems will be approached with the utmost of respect and compassion and that the information that you disclose in therapy will be handled in a confidential and caring manner.  While I treat a variety of issues, I specialize in issues related to codependency, including setting healthy boundaries, self-esteem, caretaking issues, communication problems, and anger.   Additionally I have worked in healthcare for many years and have specific, firsthand experience and knowledge of what it is like to work in that environment, making me an excellent therapist to other healthcare providers.  I am also a Certified Gerontologist and Certified Dementia Practitioner and specialize in aging related issues and Alzheimer's/Dementia.

For over 15 years, I have worked closely with specially trained consult-liaison psychiatrists making me an excellent candidate for case consultation.  I have refined the ability to tease out differential diagnoses to a degree which many clinicians in private practice have not been exposed and I have an exceptional working knowledge of medications and their effects.

As a clinical supervisor, I have supervised dozens of new clinicians and helped them to master the art of creating therapeutic alliances and mastering interventions with their clients.  I foster a supportive environment that allows the new clinician to work through their own "stuff," creating a more competent and present therapist who is ready for the real world, armed with resilience.
